Adult Swim's Top New Show of This Year Earns a Significant Extension for Two More Seasons.
In October of last year, Adult Swim saw the return of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, shortly thereafter, the channel unveiled a fresh animated series with a distinctly unique feel. Haha, You Clowns proved to be sweet and soothing, evoking a cartoon version of a contemplative talk show. At a time often characterized by cynicism, this show's earnestness found an audience and turned it into a breakout hit.
A Major Commitment
In mid-December, the network confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for a further two seasons. This offers creator Joe Cappa ample opportunity to further explore the world of the Campbell family. The series centers on three respectful teenage brothers whose defining trait is their profound affection for their widowed father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four main characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the fans of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and spread the word," remarked Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for seasons to come."
Executive Acclaim
In the same announcement praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and uniquely eerie." He thanked the fans who embraced the show and advocated for its peculiarly charming sensibility.
"All of you supported this new show, praised it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Comforting Counterpoint
Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a comforting antidote" to more cynical adult animated fare. It offers something unexpectedly cozy about observing this charming family go about their simple existence.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa stated his goal to move the comedy genre beyond its long-running sarcastic tone. He linked this trend to a broader media landscape.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” explained Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we need to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
What Comes Next
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa could potentially catalyze that comedic shift. Or at the very least, the renewal ensures audiences additional episodes to bask in the heartfelt moments of the endearing Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The entire series is currently streaming on HBO Max.
