Despite Massive Achievement, Clair Obscur Creators Intend to Maintain Team Small
The game Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is not only a top GOTY contender, but also an enormous financial hit. Developer Sandfall Interactive along with publisher Kepler Interactive disclosed that this title topped five million copies in sales, this is in spite of its status as a launch-day addition through the Game Pass service.
This achievement came as quite a shock for the team. I firmly believed that we would have a solid title garnering some average sales results,” a key executive stated.
The CTO and lead programmer noted that Clair Obscur’s Metacritic rating, now standing at 93, came as perhaps the greatest surprise” to the team relative to our early predictions and what the reality turned out to be. Because when it dropped everybody in the studio were cheering loudly. It felt absolutely wild.”
This triumph resulted in the studio creating a free update for the game with a new environment, adversaries, and boss fights, as announced would be out sometime soon.
That said, despite the game's evolution, fans shouldn't anticipate they'll hire extensively. Our team includes an excellent group with a strong creative director possessing strong ideas for our work and also for new ideas. Our goal is to maintain the human scale that made this possible then develop major titles sequentially,” the producer noted.
The size of Sandfall generated a storm of discussion upon the title's release. Some developers, including renowned designers, viewed the development group as the “ideal” for creative teams. Although the team is and was relatively lean next to major studios, checking the title's staff list shows that numerous contributors were involved; the French studio partnered with overseas animators to work on gameplay animations, to illustrate.
“We will hire slightly more for sure if we have a future production surge in upcoming years,” they stated. “But I would see rather a creative atelier with a small number of really talented people capable of producing collective masterpieces.” They emphasized that their core belief as developers “aims to keep the key advantages that enabled this success in the first place.”
While it may be too early for Sandfall to disclose concrete plans about future projects — believe me, I attempted to learn more — the developers understand their fundamental principles. “Strategic combat, is integral to our identity of what we built,” the lead programmer said. “It's still premature to announce what will interest us, but it's important also to remain faithful to our studio's essence with [a] strong narrative universe and the interesting gameplay that excites us.”
The lead programmer added that the project began with their director developing his passion title. And hopefully this approach will be repeated in coming projects.”
