Hardline Ex- Lawmaker J.A. Kast Voted In as Chile's Incoming Leader.
Following a conclusive second-round vote, far-right figure José Antonio Kast has clinched the presidential office in Chile.
A Resounding Victory
After over 99% of votes tallied, Kast won 58.17% of the ballots, beating leftist candidate Jeannette Jara, who obtained 41.83%.
This marks Kast's third attempt at the presidency, having earlier been lost by the sitting president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 runoff.
Agenda Centered On Security and Immigration
Recognized for his strong Catholic views and praise for the rule of former leader Augusto Pinochet, Kast's electoral bid was mostly centered on promises to combat increasing violence and significantly curb migration.
He repeatedly pointed to foreigners, especially the approximately 330,000 undocumented individuals in Chile, for public safety problems. During the election cycle, he gave an final demand for them to leave before the March 11 handover or face expulsion.
His plans featured controversial measures such as constructing holding facilities, barriers, security fences, and bolstering the army presence on the northern frontier.
Amid a Broader Wave
Numerous observers view Kast's success as fitting into a broader conservative trend in South America, coming after recent political outcomes in nations like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.
Nevertheless, other experts further describe it as a continuation of the regular alternation of power between left and right leadership since Chile's transition to democracy in 1990.
Ruling Lacking a Strong Mandate
Despite his decisive popular vote win, Kast does not command an absolute majority in parliament, not in the lower house nor the Senate, even if various rightwing parties are counted together.
This political landscape may challenge his policy goals, such as a promise to reduce public spending by $6 billion within 18 months—a plan for which he has yet to detailed a clear explanation.
"We have numerous questions about what a Kast government will be that are uncertain because he has not explained his methods for implement them," said a political professor.
The professor added, "In terms of fiscal matters, it is highly probable we will see adjustment measures typical of the right-wing. But the area with far less doubt is on security policy, because that has been his workhorse during the race."
