Initial Memorial Service Held for Greater Manchester Jewish House of Worship Assault Victim
A large number of people gathered for the funeral rites for one of the two men lost in the recent violent incident at the Jewish house of worship in Manchester.
Family members, members from the Heaton Park Synagogue including Rabbi Daniel Walker, and members of the broader Jewish population gathered in Pendlebury, Salford to honor the memory to 66-year-old Melvin Cravitz.
Those present crowded the graveside area, with a significant number standing beyond the prayer hall in the wet weather, listening to the service and the eulogy over audio systems.
Mr Cravitz died after an perpetrator drove a vehicle into and stabbed congregants assembling for a religious observance to commemorate Yom Kippur – the holiest day of the Hebrew calendar – at the Heaton Park Jewish congregation.
'Kind to all'
Rabbi Daniel Walker, who helped to prevent the assailant from breaching the synagogue, was among those at the victim's burial ceremony.
In a tribute issued on the following day, the family of the victim asked for time alone and said he would "readily offer support to those in need".
They said: "He was so kind, caring and always wanted to chat and get to know people."
"He cherished his marital and family bonds deeply and took great pleasure in dining."
A neighbor, a 35-year-old neighbor who said he was acquainted with Melvin for decades, said: "He was friendly with everybody – he did not have a bad word with anybody."
Another local, Andy Kordas, said: "He always used to come over and have a chat and ask me what I was up to."
"A smile was ever-present on his countenance. This tragedy is heartbreaking."
'Cherished sibling'
Another neighbor, Bilal Ahmad, who said he had been a community member for two decades, mentioned that Melvin was a "wonderful person" and "extremely composed".
"He would always say hello when you came past."
The additional fatality of the incident, Adrian Daulby, was referred to as a "hero" by his relatives in a tribute.
They additionally stated the fifty-three-year-old was "a beloved brother and loving uncle."
Three additional individuals were transported for medical care with significant wounds.
Police late on Saturday said two males and two females were still detained after being arrested on charges related to terrorism offences.
An teenage female and a middle-aged male have been discharged with no further legal steps.
