We are analyzing images and video posted this morning that show the scene of a reported vehicle-borne explosive explosion that authorities in Russia state killed a high-ranking military officer in Moscow.
Russian authorities confirmed that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was in the vehicle that detonated and that he later died to his wounds. An investigation is currently ongoing.
The initial step to check the location from which the images were from was based on social media reports indicating the blast happened on Yasenevaya Street in the southern district of the capital city of Russia.
Our analysis employed panoramic mapping services on Google Maps and the local mapping service Yandex Maps to corroborate the distinctive yellow hue of a nearby apartment building captured in the footage.
Identifying other buildings, streetlights and the street layout confirmed the exact location the footage were captured.
We also checked that the video clips were recent and that the visuals had not been manipulated.
