Milei Statuette, Any Takers? Meloni to Auction Off World Leaders' Gifts for Good Cause
Getting rid of undesired gifts can be seen as somewhat rude – unless it's done the right way.
A Charitable Auction
The Italian premier, Giorgia Meloni, plans to auction around 270 presents received by her by foreign dignitaries while abroad. This unusual assortment reportedly features gifts including a chainsaw-wielding statuette of Argentinian president Javier Milei and a pair of exotic blue snake-skin shoes with gold heels.
The collection, combined, have an approximate value of €800,000. The plan is to put up for sale in a public auction by a Rome-based auction firm. A date has not been finalized, but the intention is to conduct the sale by year's end, with the revenue benefiting non-profit organizations.
Palazzo Chigi Collection
These gifts are said to be locked away in a storage room on the third floor of Palazzo Chigi. Reports indicate that Meloni is also planning to auction off gifts received by her political forerunners that have been stored away indefinitely.
The detailed catalog remains disclosed, but some insight emerged earlier this year when an 11-page list of official presents was presented in parliament. The query centered on whether a statutory cap on gift value was being followed. By law, a prime minister cannot take home presents valued above €300.
A Global Assortment of Presents
Among the items:
- A scarf from the Albanian prime minister, reportedly given to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
- A sari from Kerala from the Indian leader.
- A box of jewellery from the president of Slovakia.
- A fine china tea service and six bottles of wine from the Hungarian prime minister.
- A ceramic bowl from the ex-American leader.
- A tablet from the Ukrainian president.
- Watercolour paintings from the Moldovan government.
- Additional objects including makeup, a board, and several rugs received during trips to Libya and other Arab nations.
"Maybe the oddest gifts included the Milei figurine and the blue python skin shoes," one might note.
Political Context
The prime minister has received praise, particularly from her allies, with building relationships with global statesmen and re-establishing Italy as a prominent force on the global scene once again.
This charitable initiative highlights a unconventional way to manage the protocol gifts that build up during a leader's tenure.
