The English golfer Clinches Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship in Thrilling Play-Off Showdown Versus Fellow Englishman Fleetwood

The 30-year-old golfer displayed exceptional nerve to claim the prestigious Abu Dhabi title on the final day, beating his compatriot in a dramatic play-off after a rollercoaster last day of play.

Rai sank a decisive birdie from just over eight feet to clinch the win, echoing his only previous tournament triumph at the Scottish Open in 2020, which was also a play-off win over Fleetwood.

Final Round Excitement

The champion entered the final round with a one-shot lead over fellow Englishman Tommy Fleetwood and Denmark’s Højgaard. He finished with a overall score of twenty-under after a up-and-down, 67 final round that included seven birdies and a pair of bogeys.

Fleetwood edged a stroke clear with the 16th and 17th to play after a birdie on the 16th, but Rai tied it up again on the 17th and then failed to convert a 10-foot birdie attempt to claim victory on the final hole.

Play-Off Climax

This set up a play-off at Yas Links where Rai triumphed to take the championship and $1.5m (£1.13 million) in prize money.

{“Tommy is a phenomenal player and an even more person. To play with him the final two rounds was truly memorable,” stated the winner, the present world No 30. “You’re so concentrated on playing the round and staying in the zone, it’s hard to put into words at the moment how it feels. It is amazing to be stood here.”

Notable Contenders

The Northern Irish star found himself just too much to do, coming up a stroke behind in a shared third place with the Dane, after a stunning 10-under final round of 62. It was his best-ever score on the European Tour, comprising eight birdie putts and an eagle.

The Danish golfer fired six birdie putts of his as well, but his hopes of leading the leaderboard were dented by a bogey on the twelfth. English golfer Richard Mansell hit an excellent last round 63 to end up tied for fifth with Australian Daniel Hillier.
