Virginia's New Governor Makes History as First Female Governor

Throughout 250 years, Virginia has seen 74 governors, all of them men. On Tuesday, Abigail Spanberger broke this historic barrier by being elected as the state's inaugural woman leader in the commonwealth's records.

Emphasizing Economic Issues and Strategic Opposition

Ex- US congresswoman and CIA operative succeeded with a campaign that focused on economic pressures and strategically opposed Donald Trump's policies as opposed to the president himself.

Beginnings and Academic Journey

Hailing from in the Garden State on August 7, 1979, she moved to a Richmond area at her early teens. Her father was an army veteran who later pursued a career in police work; her mother was a healthcare professional and volunteer.

She studied at the UVA, obtaining a diploma in French studies. Post-graduation, she worked briefly as a educator before pursuing a career in public service.

“I was raised understanding that I wanted to walk the same path as my dad and I did,” she shared with supporters at a gathering in the city of Norfolk over the weekend.

Public Service Career

At the Postal Service, she investigated involving narcotics, abusers and money launderers. She executed legal orders, frequently being the sole female on the operation squad. She then joined the Central Intelligence Agency and focused on national security, serving undercover and internationally.

Personal Crossroads

In 2014, she and her husband Adam, an technical professional, considered their future. Living on the west coast, they were contemplating another overseas assignment. They took out a world map and asked their oldest child, then in elementary school, where they should go. the commonwealth, she answered, because “family and friends reside in Virginia”.

Spanberger recalled at her rally: “And so we decided to shift from a national duty, to state involvement because she was right. Everyone we love lives in Virginia.”

Political Beginnings

Back in her home state, she volunteered with a grassroots group, which combats gun violence, and started a Girl Scout troop. In 2017, she chose to seek office, which others told her was a “long shot” because no Democrat had secured the congressional seat in 50 years.

“But I witnessed what Donald Trump was doing with his actions and how he was pitting neighbour against neighbour. And I saw my member of Congress over and over again oppose the healthcare law. And I knew I had to take action. So spoiler: I won.”

Centrist Approach

In Washington, she quickly became part of the Blue Dog Coalition, a alliance of moderate and fiscally moderate lawmakers. She prioritized less visible matters: bringing internet access to the countryside, combating narcotics trade and support for former troops.

She earned a standing for working with colleagues across the aisle and was often cited as the most bipartisan representative of the state's congressmembers. She was outspoken about messaging that she believed turned off independents, warning her party against partisan language that could be weaponised in contested districts.

Centrist Group

Along with Representatives Elissa Slotkin and Mikie Sherrill, she was dubbed a part of the “pragmatic group” in contrast to the progressive “group” of AOC.

Run for Governor

In late 2023, she declared she would step down for a another term and would instead campaign for Virginia's leadership in 2025.

Her platform centred on ideas of civic duty, support for schools and public works and protection of democratic institutions. Her federal service lent her credibility on defense issues and she described public service as a calling rather than a job.

Successful Campaign

This helped her to overcome Republican opponent her challenger's attacks on social topics, notably the assertion that Spanberger is an radical on individual freedoms and medical services for the LGBTQ+ community.

Spanberger, who maintained that communities should decide whether transgender students can compete in school athletics, cast her opponent as the candidate more misaligned with the mainstream of the commonwealth's citizens.
